Exact surfaces, solids and meshes in a design model

Understand how geometric representation affects inspection, editing and downstream work.

Representation affects the edit

A triangular mesh approximates a surface with connected faces. A surface representation such as NURBS describes geometry through a mathematical construction. These representations support different operations and can both be useful in a design workflow.

A model file may contain several types at once. The Cartesian landing page labels the landscape and large-scale 3DM examples as containing NURBS solids and mesh parts. Inspect an individual object before deciding how to trim, join, measure or modify it.

Exact geometry does not mean exact knowledge

A mathematically defined surface can still describe the wrong dimension or an assumption about an unseen part. Geometry precision and evidence accuracy are separate questions. A model derived from a photograph needs its dimensions and assumptions reviewed even if its geometry is precisely represented.

Similarly, a closed solid does not by itself establish structural safety, code compliance or manufacturing suitability. Those conclusions need the relevant requirements and measurements.

Choose a practical handoff

Keep the representation that supports the next user's task. If they need to inspect editable CAD geometry, give them a compatible document and explain which object types it contains. If they need a mesh, document the export unit and the geometric checks already performed.

Retain the source revision and avoid promising that conversion preserves every property. Comparing the public 3DM and STL downloads is a concrete way to see which information each receiving tool retains.
